Passing through the Rhodopian Mountains for the last time, the Balkan Offroad Rallye says goodbye to the high mountains and heads east to the second bivouac in Starosel. ‘Thank you for the lovely route and the beautiful views!’ says Martin Schlinke, codriver of Ewald Holler from Austria.
In their Toyota Corolla Ewald Holler and Martin Schlinke simply enjoy the mountains and the landscape of Bulgaria, racing at high speed but with a clear eye on their goal: to reach Varna. ‘So far we’ve had one loose bolt, but that could have happened everywhere. Racing here requires a lot of self control as the roadbook tells you where to go but you have find your own lines through the terrain.’
Bernard Munster smiles quietly as he sees the stage results of today. As the Balkan Classic Rallye runs alongside the Balkan Offroad Rallye some stages are shared. Pawel Moglo wins with 1:19min with his Overdrive Hilux, and on the same stage Bernard Munster is no less than 5 seconds faster! The incredible speed of the classic rallycars is something different, as they are very fast on this rough terrain.
Andrew Siddal is leading in the overal ranking, with a comfortable 30 minutes lead over Jorge Perez from Argentina, who won the stage today. Balkan Classic Rallye is a marathon and those team who adjust to the distance and the terrain will be the most succesful at the end of the week, as we arrive on the coast of the Black Sea.
